Jaguar is to recreate itself as the Tesla of the West Midlands and become a fully electric car manufacturer within four years.

The move will involve scrapping the current Jaguar range, apart from the I-Pace, its much-fêted battery model, and closing the Castle Bromwich factory near Birmingham as a car manufacturing plant.

Unite, the carworkers’ union, said it would support the transition as long as there were no forced redundancies.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) said the commitment by Jaguar should push the government into getting fully behind an electric car industrial strategy.
